The internet is obsessed with optimization. We used to wear watches simply to check the time. Now we’ve got smartwatches that track our sleep, heart rate, steps, emails, and even our stress levels. Because we love data. But here's the thing: too much data makes us forget our most important job: Actually do the work.Let's use Formula 1 as an example. In 2019, Pierre Gasly got a huge promotion. He got promoted from the junior team Toro Rosso to Red Bull, a Top 3 team at the time. But there was one problem: his teammate was Max Verstappen. A rising star who's now a 4x world champion. And Pierre got outperformed by his teammate. His pace looked way off. And guess what he did... He buried himself in data. Comparing his record with Max's. The Team Principal, Christian Horner, noticed and said: "Pierre spends an awful lot of his time looking at data. Too much so. He's not driving on instinct. At this level, you can't do that. He needs to stop screwing up his own head and measuring himself against Max. And... LET IT FLOW.His obsession with numbers was eating him alive... It distracted him from actually doing the work, which is driving. The executive wasn't satisfied with his performance... so he got dropped back to Toro Rosso... Mid-season. What a shame. But once he returned to Toro Rosso, with the pressure gone... His instinct returned. And he secured second place in Brazil just before the season ended.
Business owners fall into the same trap... measuring instead of doing. They get obsessed with every metric: Lifetime value, cost per acquisition, conversion rates, click-through rates, average order value, churn rate, retention rate... the list goes on. Tracking matters, yes. But squeezing every ounce from the numbers can be dangerous... and frankly, unnecessary. Because businesses don’t fail from having an imperfect email sequence. They fail when they stop solving people’s problems. Sure, tweaking your copy might raise your revenue by 1–5%. But when your customers are truly satisfied, they don’t just come back... They spread the word, leave glowing reviews, and bring new customers with them. That's the real progress.Data has its place. But instincts, service, and happy customers... that’s what grows a business. Let the numbers follow the work, not replace it. That's the place every business should be focusing on.
